Friday's Happenings

Today my regular aerobics instructor called in sick so we had substitute teacher Lynn. I quickly realized this was going to be a great class. I had a dancer as an instructor, Yes! I finally had a class in which we were on beat, tempo and everything. I was one with the world today. She taught a Zumba class and I am still not sure what that was but I just know I had a good time. Sadly, Lynn does not teach at our YMCA. Figures...

Today was also the volunteer luncheon at Jacob's school. Good thing I exercised because you can see what table I thought was the best:)

Update Getting Fit for Summer

I survived the first week of my new gym program and completed 5 workouts. I attended 3 new classes including fast fit, kick boxing and pilates ball. Most of the classes include moms with kids so it is a welcoming atmosphere. One of the teachers has no musicality so it is a frustrating class not being on the beat. This is one of the main reasons I left aerobics in the first place, teachers that appear to be tone deaf. Also learned a valuable lesson, don't eat breakfast before pilates ball! Onward and upward.

Memorial Day

Holidays are always better with marshmallows. It took Michael a while to get the fire going with the beach breeze but once he did we were cooking away. We are looking forward to summer weather as it was still cold enough for sweaters. Thanks to Michael who can always get a good picture of Jacob who has been an uncooperative subject lately.

Sunday at the Beach

We took an impromptu bike ride to Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey and we had a good time. Jacob did great on the bike ride over, he is really an expert rider these days. Once we got there Jacob couldn't wait to get digging with his new shovel and pail. He did not want to have anything to do with the play structure, he just wanted to dig holes and move wet sand around.

Michael and I enjoyed dinner at the Cheesecake Factory the night before (alone!) thanks to Nana and Zaide. Jacob enjoyed a grandparents day on Saturday by going to the movies (Disney Earth), getting a haircut and having dinner. He said it was a real treat (and we have it on film).

Flour Boy

I made the mistake of commenting to Jacob that I was going to make lemon bars. He quickly decided he did not want lemon bars and got out my Mrs. Fields cookie book (with pictures) and started looking for recipes. He wanted to make something that required cookie cutters so we decided on sugar cookies. Michael commented that he was making more work for me which I knew but I thought I would foster his baking skills. Big mistake! For some reason as Jacob gets older the messes he can make get bigger. I am so glad that my housekeeper came before I made these cookies.

Michael's Trip to Florida

Hey, Michael here. This is my first entry in the now world famous "The Zwangs" blog. Last week I had the opportunity to visit the Space Shuttle processing and launch facilities at Cape Canaveral on a Boeing business trip. My Florida Boeing comrades arranged a great behind the scenes tour. Here you see me standing in front of the crawler used to move the space shuttle from the processing facility to the pad. This thing is big! We also spent some time wandering around Discovery in the area where they recondition each orbiter between launches. Trivia item: the orbiter wears Michelin tires.

Getting a Jump on Summer Fitness

My gym is sponsoring a program to get members fit for summer. From now until June 15th I am supposed to attend 5 classes/workouts per week and have the instructor sign off after the class. When the month is up, all who completed these workouts will be entered to win prizes. The timing is perfect since Jacob will be out of school on the 19th, at which point I will have no hope of getting to the gym.

Today I attended my first class but it was a bumpy morning. I showed up to a 9 AM class but was told that class no longer exists so I had to wait for the 9:45 AM class. Needless to say I was not happy. I kept myself busy by working out on one of the machines and pointed out all the flaws of their system. I am hopeful the week will get better and not worse. I will keep you updated on my progress because misery loves company.

Red, White and Blue Day

Jacob's kindergarten class celebrated the culmination of their social studies unit on America with a patriotic parade. Nothing like a Sousa march to get you in a good mood. The kids designed their "floats" themselves and I think they did a great job. Of course the parade ended with a snack treat.

Party Time

We went to a birthday party this weekend at My Gym and Jacob had a great time. The kids did not stop moving for 2 hours. Some of the pictures are blurry because Jacob was moving so fast. He tried a zip cord for the first time but he only wanted to do it once.

Jacob the Engineer

Friday, Jacob woke up at 7:30 AM and proclaimed "I have a sore throat and I'm sick". So I believed him and let him stay home. After a long leisurely breakfast I told Jacob I was going to take a shower since I couldn't go to the gym. While I was gone he built this vehicle from a physics set that Michael had given him. To say the least I was very impressed. As the day went on I realized I had been doped by a 5 year old since he didn't appear sick at all. We all need a day off once in a while even a 5 year old. I have a video of this vehicle running but I need Michael to make it into a smaller format to upload to my blog. So to be continued.
