I let Jacob be in charge and decide where he wanted to go, so we headed off for the giraffes first. Of course they had to be the farthest exhibit from the entrance.

Our Trip to the LA Zoo
I took Jacob to the LA Zoo on February 21st since it was a school holiday. I just didn't expect that half of LA would have the same idea.

This black bear looks more like a rug than an animal.

Jacob said his favorite animal was the rhinoceros, even without the horn. We talked about why his horn was gone but he knew already from Bindi the Jungle Girl.
I don't even remember what animal this was but it looks interesting.
The new elephant exhibit was one of the reasons that we went. The elephants were shy or something because we didn't see them much. I kind of understand why PETA was upset with the captivity of elephants it does seem small for 4 grown elephants.

Happy Valentine's Day
Today was filled with sweet surprises. Jacob won citizen of the week for his class and of course I did not have a camera.
We celebrated our Valentine's Day on Sunday in which I baked all these goodies and we made a fancy meal. Life is good. Hope you all had wonderful day.

The Ant Farm
The tube of ants came with a caution to "never handle or touch ants directly as they bite or sting to defend themselves". As soon as Jacob heard this he did not want anything to do with the project. But luckily additional instructions said to refrigerate the ants for 15 minutes to "calm them down". We successfully got the ants into the habitat without any trouble. Additional reading revealed that my ants would be very hungry and thirsty and I should drop a little food and water into the habitat. You mean I have to feed these things! Considering what I usually do to an ant, feeding and watering it is not on the top of my list. Luckily Jacob has volunteered for this job.

Caribbean Cruise 2011
First island was St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. We went to Fort Frederik Museum where we learned a little about the Danish Monarchy and a lot about slavery. The picture of Jacob with the cannons is Fort Frederik.
The next island was Antigua. The ships anchored in the city of St. John's which was a busy port with 3 cruise ships. Our destination that day was Darkwood beach. Jacob was thrilled to dig a hole and get inside (pictured above). It was a white sandy beach and very quiet.
By the third island our luck of being illness free on every cruise wore off. Jacob woke up with a fever and wanted to stay on ship. We loaded him up Tylenol and let him take a 2 hour nap. He felt much better in the afternoon and the promise of a jet ski ride got him off of the ship. We were now on the island of St. Lucia. The plan for the day was another beach. This beach was very busy but still pretty and had many shells. Jacob loved digging a hole again and of course the jet ski ride. We had a great day but by dinner Jacob's fever had returned and he was back in bed.
Our last stop was the island of St. Kitts. Jacob was still not feeling well so we stayed on board until the afternoon. We toured around the port city of Basseterre which was know for its many shops. We told Jacob he could pick out a souvenir and he chose a wood turtle and a postcard map of the Caribbean. We have a picture of the lady we bought it from and she also told us about Jacob beads.
A good time was had by all. Where to next year...
